Lavender History in Australia

The main centre for lavender oil production for Australia has been the Bridestowe Estate first established in 1921 and still active today.

Bridestowe was developed by the Denny family who had been involved with the English lavender industry and family members were involved in the essential oil distillation industry.

A second small but viable lavender oil industry was located in southern Victoria during the 1930’s.

A significant amount of the lavender oil produced in Victoria was exported to England.

Unfortunately as this industry expanded the Customs and Excise Department would not grant further distillation licenses and so the emerging Victorian lavender industry failed to further develop and finally failed.

In the early 1990’s there was renewed interest in growing lavender commercially in Australia. As Information became available grower numbers increased.

The lavender industry in Australia can still be regarded as cottage as most growers are finding difficulty sourcing correctly named cultivars and developing smallish trial plots of lavender.

Some further established growers are producing lavender products and entering the retail market.  A few lavender growers are increasing their plantings and developing a strategy to market commercially their lavender products.
